It is never easy to start your work late at night, especially when you know that everybody in your home is having a sound sleep already. But with your type of work requiring it, you have no choice—but you can do something to help you survive the night shift.Work on some stretches.
Performing some stretch routines right in your workstation will enable proper circulation of the blood. It can also help you fight sleepiness and stress. Try to do some stretches for at least 10 minutes each hour. You can also do some brisk walking or you can choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator as you go up or down the building.
Get healthy with your food choices.
If you are not getting enough sleep, your body will crave for something that has carbohydrates to boost your energy. This can certainly cause you to gain weight. For this reason, you have to have a change of plan. Instead of grabbing anything that your body desires, opt for the healthy ones. For one, eat nuts; they are rich in protein, healthy fats and fiber. They can easily make your tummy feel full.
Drink plenty of water.
You do not have to make yourself super busy to keep you awake all night. Drinking lots of water can help. If you want something sweet and soda is the only one available in the office pantry, you can prepare your own fruit juice at home and bring it along with your packed healthy dinner.
Take a light morning meal at least a couple of hours before turning in.
Soon as you get home, you know that you have to be able to go to sleep quickly or you’ll have difficulty waking up later. What you do is to make sure that you have taken a light morning meal at least two hours before your shift ends. You are then giving your body enough time to digest food.
Never expose yourself to morning light.
As you go out from work, wear sunglasses that are enough to minimize your exposure to morning light and to let you see the road, especially if you are the one driving.
It is normal for night shift workers to feel tired or drowsy as they wake up. The strategy here is to give your room the brightness it needs. Turn on the lights the moment you open your eyes. It will help if you have an alarm clock that emits light after a certain time.
