Produce codes or sticker labels on fruit actually tell us how the fruit has been grown. It can tell whether the fruit was organically grown or conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides or genetically engineered.
The following is numbers you can look for the next time you go shopping.
Conventional Fruit Labels- These will have four (4) digits and does not start with nine (9). These usually start with the digit four (4).
Organic Fruit Labels- These are five (5) digits and starts with nine (9).
Genetically Modified Fruits- These start with the digit eight (8). This can be good to know because stores are not obligated to tell you if a fruit has been genetically modified.
So, if you are in the grocery store and pick up an apple with the label number 4922, it’s a conventional apple grown with herbicides. If the label or sticker has a 99222, it’s organic and safe to eat. If it says 89222, then it has been genetically modified (GMO).
