I’m sure it is no fun to have chronic pain everyday from Fibromyalgia. I have spoken to several people who have expressed their pain, not only the pain within their body, but the pain of trying to get a doctor to help take the pain away. I have heard their frustrations and how much money people have spent going from doctor to doctor.
More than likely, if you are reading this article, you already have an idea what ﬁbromyalgia is, for it is not a disease that is rare. More and more people are being diagnosed and being prescribed different types of prescription medications. Some have been told to go see a psychiatrist. Pain of any kind is not something one wants or should have to live with every day of their life.
I recently heard another person mention they had been diagnosed and I started thinking back about what we were taught in medical school about the alternatives for ﬁbromyalgia.
Many people with Fibromyalgia have great fatigue and have to make themselves get up to do things. Maybe it’s not depression that has made you feel this way. Low iron levels can cause fatigue, headaches, and exhaustion. If possible, you should have your doctor check your hemoglobin and iron levels to be sure that you are not becoming anemic. By putting more iron-rich foods into your diet, it may raise the hemoglobin. Foods like red meat, eggs, and chicken may help. Some alternative doctors say to eliminate or reduce your intake of meats. That is hard to do if you are used to eating meats. By not getting enough iron in your diet, this can help cause the fatigue. Be wise however. Please do not overeat these types of foods. It is very important to try eating organic or the cleanest, no hormone, no antibiotic meat you can get.
A nice tea you can make and drink throughout the day is a combination of red clover, passionﬂower, chamomile, and milk thistle. Most health food stores that carry bulk herbs carry the above ones. You do not need much. The way I make my teas is I will bring water to a boil. Then take the water off the stove and throw the herbs in the pot. Cover and let them steep for at least ten minutes. Drain the herbs and you have a nice tea. You can add Stevia (a natural sweetener) if you like. Instead of making one cup at a time, I like to add a small handful of the combination of herbs in the water. If there is leftover at the end of the day, I’ll put the liquid in the refrigerator for one more day. You can reheat or have ice tea. Never leave the herbs in the water and never boil your herbs. Boiling the herbs is what gives it a bitter taste. Only barks and seeds should be boiled.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids may help with minor pain. There has been a lot of studies regarding the great beneﬁts of Omega 3. You can buy supplements of Omega 3 at your local health food stores, or get it through diet by eating foods such as halibut, salmon, ﬂaxseed, and tofu.
Melatonin is a natural hormone that can be purchased in your health food store. It may help you if you are having sleep difﬁculties. It is important to only take melatonin after dark so that there is no chance of playing around with your other hormones. It is a safe supplement to use but only at night. It is not a sleeping pill but can help induce drowsiness if taken about 30 minutes before bedtime. Oh by the way, don’t sleep with your TV on. You need darkness which also helps bring about a good nights sleep. Sleep helps the immune system to function correctly.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a supplement that can be found in your local health food stores. This is an amino acid which is a precursor used by the brain to manufacture serotonin, a neurotransmitter. It is believed that serotonin reduces pain and improves sleep and mood.
SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine) is a nutrient that can be found in the health food stores. It has been found to help with detoxiﬁcation and may help with cartilage formation.
Vitamin B12 can be bought in sublingual form (under the tongue).
Digestive enzymes are great because if taken on an empty stomach, the enzymes act more as an anti-inﬂammatory agent rather than a digestive enzyme.
And of course, we all need a good probiotic to keep our intestines healthy.
I want to point out that I have mentioned a few supplements you can get from your local health food stores. I know the trend is to buy off the internet but I would like to warn you about it. When you can pick up the bottle at the health food store, you are able to look at the label and see what are the other ingredients. It is wise to stay away from “other ingredients” if you can. A lot of “other ingredients” may be ﬁllers and you do not know for sure what they are. It is better to get your money’s worth of the real thing. Yes, there are good bargains on the internet but a lot of times it’s not a bargain at all because you are not getting enough of the pure ingredient you are needing. When buying off the internet, you are not always allowed to see what you need to see. This is your health and I know you are trying to get to feeling better. I am not making any money from anyone by telling you to take pride in the supplements you buy. I feel it is important to your health.
