I’ve always been a big believer in “you are what you eat”. For some reason I seem to associate the term “diet” with deprivation, punishment, or a fad! Instead, I prefer to think of dietary changes and exercise as part of a lifestyle plan and a preventative. I may not follow the Mediterranean diet, per say, but I feel incorporating many aspects of it into our lives definitely has great benefits. I try to select whole grains for my breads and cereals. I eat very little animal products, but when I do I choose fish or poultry. For protein I enjoy nuts and beans. I use olive oil in place of other types of oils (vegetable or canola) and butter. I’ve always enjoyed fruits and vegetables so I load up on those!
Not to mention the foods are delicious and often times easy to prepare. For instance I had a smoothie for breakfast this morning. I tossed 2 oz of pure pomegranate juice, a ½ cup of blueberries, a small banana, ¼ cup no sugar added apple juice, and a tablespoon of flaxseed in the blender until it was smooth. It’s a great on the go breakfast! I think I’ll try to add some of my and my family’s recipes soon. Most of them have been kid tested by my granddaughter and are easy to make. She’ll be eight in a few weeks and is just hilarious. Her little personality just shines through and she loves to joke! Recently she was showing me the spot where her “sweet tooth” used to be and the new one that’s just starting to coming through. With a serious look, she brought up we should probably go celebrate its’ arrival with ice cream! After some arm twisting, I gave in. 😉
Remember, it’s ok to give in on occasion! But there’s a reason why gelato is served with tiny spoons!
