You may or may not have turned the clocks back yet but coughs and colds may already be in the horizon. After all, autumn happens to be flu season and this is the time to do some forward planning and boost the defences of your body sooner rather than later. If you haven’t gotten an annual check-up yet now is the time. If you have a chronic condition such as arthritis or diabetes getting an assessment each year is crucial.
Support Your Immune System
Keep the flu at bay by supporting your immune system. Consider what you can do to strengthen immunity. If you are feeling a prickly throat, mouth ulcers, cold sores or sniffles, this can mean that your body is not exactly in top condition. Without strong defences, you won’t be able to fight off the flu this season. Stay away from other people that seem to have developed the flu early in the fall.
Does this sound like you? If so, a diet makeover may be just the thing you need. By the end of summer most people eat less fruit and salad. They begin eating comfort food and do carbohydrate loading. Instead, what most people need are antioxidants and vitamins that you can get from fresh produce. Eat salads with lots of lemon and olive oil as your dressing. This will help maintain the good bacteria lining your intestines, which is really the key to great immunity.
Zinc and Vitamin C will also help you ward off throat, nose and ear issues that may pop up. Manuka honey is also anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Make sure you have a stock of paracetamol in your pantry for anyone in the house that needs it. If anyone is vomiting with diarrhoea in the house, getting a check-up sooner than later is important. Doing this early will limit the spread of germs among people in one household.
You can also boost your immunity by increasing the white cell production in your body. To do this, get some exercise. The old saying not to go out in the cold does not hold true any longer. Instead, go out and embrace the cold air that hits you. Make sure you are dressed warmly. Consider joining a jogging or walking group as well. Planning to go on an exotic destination for your holiday? Do research and see if this will require tablets that fight malaria. Starting the series of medication earlier rather than later is important.
Consider a Flu Shot
Protect against swine flu and other strains of flu with a flu shot. Even if you got one last year, it is still a good idea to get one this year. The reason is that new strains of the flu virus may have developed and getting an updated shot is highly recommended. Some people get a flu shot and actually feel like they caught the flu just after getting the shot. This is normal as your body builds immunity against the new strains. Ask your doctor about taking paracetamol if you feel flu-like symptoms after the shot.
The fall season is upon us – make your move to protect yourself to fully enjoy what the season brings.
