Thanksgiving is a time for families to get together. With it comes the ruckus of roughhousing and cooking too much food at any given time. With so many people inside the house, it’s no wonder that accidents and mishaps happen – and your health can be compromised.
Here are some of the common health woes that seem to be popular around Thanksgiving.
• Physical Injuries – This includes sprains, strains, and the usual case of ouchies that stem from rough play while waiting for the food to cook. This is common among families that play backyard football, tag, or any other kind of strenuous physical activities prior to sitting down to dinner. While playing sports is a great way to bond with your family, forcing your granddad and even younger cousins who are not active during the year to play can have health hazards.
If your family is one to bond over sports, then make sure that all players are properly hydrated and have at least stretched and warmed up before the game. This is particularly important if they are aspiring for an ambitious game of soccer or Frisbee. Above all, try to keep in mind that it is friendly competition – there should be no added points if someone gets hurt.
• Foodborne illnesses – This is perhaps the most common among health woes during Thanksgiving. Food poisoning, such as salmonella poisoning, is the result of improper handling and preparation of the food. On the other hand, sometimes people mistake the cook on their turkey and would serve uncooked food. When this happens, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea then become the order of the day in your house. When your Thanksgiving dinner results to a foodborne illness, make sure to give the patient enough water and rehydrate them with Pedialyte. You should also seek professional help once the pain or diarrhea does not subside over a period of time.
• Burns – Minor burns are common in the kitchen. During Thanksgiving however, the word “common” is upped a notch as it seems to become the norm. Now, mild burns (where the burn didn’t penetrate the skin) from handling hot dishes from the microwave, stoves, or ovens can easily be treated at home. Just hold the affected skin under cool running water, or immerse under cool water until the pain subsides. For major burns however, immediately bring your loved one to the emergency room. Delaying can pose serious problems to their health.
• Hangovers – Some people actually come to the hospital the day after Thanksgiving after nursing nasty hangovers. To avoid this, make sure that you rehydrate properly and to get enough rest. If you still feel the effects of the alcohol upon waking up, then take a cold shower and drink plenty of electrolyte-rich beverages.
It is never a bad idea to practice caution during the holidays, as doing so can make the event even more memorable for you. Remember, it’s not about how much you can eat or how many drinks you can consume that should matter – your health is important too.
