We are all aware of the disease called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), and we are aware that every year many people die because of this illness which has no cure. Do you know that people around the world are finding ways how to protect themselves from HIV/aids? There is this campaign that is held every year, organized and done by different organizations and communities around the globe, gathered together to help and take action to protect women, girls and their partners from the deadly virus HIV. Held every march 10 of each year, the said event promotes awareness amongst women about HIV and AIDS and what they can do about it.
What happens during this day?
During this awareness day women and girls are taught about the impact of this virus. During the month of March many different organizations come together to share information, to offer hope, love and support to every woman and girl with this disease. It is also a day of empowerment and to learn the importance of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.
What are the programs related to this day?
Women are encouraged to join and participate in a webcasts, encouraged to join awareness walks, attend concerts as well as different programs which have lessons for women and girls on how to protect themselves. Well known personalities promote preventive measures and actions. Ambassadors help women and girls with the disease by giving support and love and reducing the stigma of HIV/AIDS.
What can we do? How can we be involved?
There are many ways to get involved in this campaign. One is host an event, use your resources to share information with others, organize events that spread information on HIV/AIDS, give out learning materials to women and girls, or if you’re feeling cinematic, why not make documentaries about the realities of HIV/AIDS? If you are a doctor or medical practitioner, offer HIV testing in your clinic. Hold an interactive school assembly which can provide educational information about HIV/AIDS for students particularly young girls, another is writing an article in the newspaper sharing realities, ideas, and stories about HIV/AIDS awareness. Use the internet to spread the awareness online wherein women and girls can easily share the idea, love and care with others through social media and many more. There are so many ways to participate in this campaign, we just need to open our minds and hearts on how can we help each other.
What are the effects of every NWGHAAD?
Did you know that since this campaign started many women and girls became aware and had been protected from this virus, many became conscious about their health and way of living particularly their intimate life? Many studies have shown that when this campaign started the rate of women and girls having HIV/AIDS have been continuously decreasing. NWGHAAD maybe not a cure but is a very good preventive measure to avoid HIV/AIDS.
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is not just for women and girls, it’s for all of us, for everybody. Let us all be aware that HIV/AIDS can be prevented, let us share the knowledge with everyone, it’s just like what doctors always says “ Prevention is better than cure”.
