Are Our Children Going To Keep Us A First World?

Are Our Children Going To Keep Us A First World?
I have been in the medical field for many decades. When certain topics come up, I immediately start thinking about the future of medicine. I am really worried about the future of good solid medicine. No, it’s not the Obama Care that bothers me the most. However that is definitely a problem and not the answer. I worry about our children’s education. Our United States’ children are the United States’ future. If they can not read, do math, problem solve, or think critically, what is going to happen to our country?

I’m sure some of you are saying to yourself, “Now she is going a little extreme with this one.” Nope, I don’t think so! CNN just did a segment on the US education rankings. Please watch the video I have included:

As you will see in the report, the United States is below Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia. I researched these two countries because I wanted to make sure I would not be telling you something not true. I found that both countries, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia are considered Third World Countries. We are ranked 31 in education. The United States is suppose to have more money, more everything than these two countries. Yet, the excuse for our children’s educational decline is “budget cuts and teacher layoffs.” Um, who is really managing the budget and forgetting about the children?

I have also added a link to show you where we are with the other counties in reading, math and science. It appears we are number 33 for reading which is below Mexico. We are number 27 in math which is below Luxemburg and Spain. We are number 22 in science which is below Iceland and Poland.

U.S. Education Secretary, Arne Duncan reported last January 12th, 2012, “One generation ago we led the world in college graduation. We are 16th today. In one generation, we’ve flat lined. we’ve stagnated.”

I feel things need to change before we are on our way to becoming almost a third world. We need to come together as a country, as a state, as a community, as a family, and strive to help our children. If they loose the opportunity to have a good education, its not just that child losing. It is all of us and the future of our great country.

There is some good news in this gloomy article. According to Global Innovation Index, the U.S. is ranked 10th in innovation. We are the home for Facebook, Apple, and Google. Thats great but maybe our children are spending more time on Facebook than they are studying. Just a thought!
