With May being the National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, it is but right that you begin thinking of ways (in case you haven’t started yet) to become physically active. According to Shellie Pfohl, President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition executive director, “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is the ideal time for every American to take steps to improve our health by engaging in a healthier and more active lifestyle.” Below are some tips to guide you:
- Take a break from your usual routine.
If you are used to watching TV all day during weekends, why not reduce your TV time and do other things that will help you move and sweat? For instance, attend to your garden. Water the plants and trim off some leaves. If you are used to meeting friends for coffee, why not invite them to join you for a short walk to the park? Instead of taking the elevators in your office, you can also try climbing the stairs.
Never say that you lack the time to do physical activities because if you really want to, you can squeeze them in your daily schedule.
- Find the workout or sport that will work for you.
Sports and exercises are too many; you can’t say that there’s nothing that can fit you – you are only making alibis. Search for easy workout routines over the Internet – there’s aerobics, Pilates, zumba, and others. Join friends as they play tennis, badminton, volleyball, and others. If you are really that lazy and you still need more time before you can commit, you can start with walking and dancing.
- Do things that will make you interested in becoming physically active.
Always bring your exercise clothes with you. Make sure that it is within your eyes’ reach so you are constantly reminded that you need to head to the gym and use them. Buy treadmill and place it in an area where you can see it every day. Soon, you’ll be able to realize that you’ll waste the money that you paid for it if you do not use it. Write a schedule – jog for 10 minutes after you wake up every day – in one piece of bond paper. Paste it in your bedroom door.
- Ask friends and family members to join you.
Playing a sport or working out is more enjoyable if you do it with friends and family members. Arrange a morning jog going to the picnic area, where all of you can enjoy healthy breakfast meal after. Participate in sports events like marathon in your community and again, let them join you.
- Ask a fitness expert to create a physical activity plan for you.
Consult with fitness professional and discuss with him your work schedule, your limitations (if you have any personal or health issue), and the routines that you can easily do. Let him develop a physical activity plan for you. Follow it strictly and you are in to an active, healthy lifestyle.
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and it’s high time that you realize the importance of engaging in physical activities. It is good for your body and mind, and it saves you on future medical cost.
