FDA adds warning to birth control pills

Attention ladies! This is a good warning from the FDA because it can saves lives. April 10, 2012, the FDA announced they will start adding a warning sign to the labels of all drospirenone-containing birth control pills. These pills include Yaz, Yasmin, Safyral, and Beyaz. All of the above listed pills are manufactured by Bayer.

Drospirenone is a synthetic progesterone added to some birth control pills. The FDA announced today there may be a higher risk for venous thromboembolism (blood clots) than pills which contain other types of progestins.

Recent epidemiological studies report as much as a 3-fold increase in the risk for blood clots in women using birth control pills containing drospirenone, compared with women using pills that contain different progestins, such as levonorgestrel.

The FDA also noted that all oral contraceptives combining an estrogen and progestin to some degree increases the risk for deep vein thrombosis. A deep vein thrombosis can lead to a pulmonary embolism. As we all know, a pulmonary embolism if not treated quickly, can lead to death.

Please ask your doctor if he or she received this notice today. Also ask which birth control pill would be the safest for you.
