Family Men More Likely To Succumb To Depression Without Company Of Children

A surprising study conducted by British researchers discovered that men succumb to depression as much as women if they were left childless. The study also revealed that familial expectations and culture can influence a man’s decision to have kids.A researcher from Keele University, Staffordshire, England, Robin Hadley lead a survey that included childless 81 women and 27 men. The participating men and women were inquired whether they wanted to start a family and their reasons surrounding that particular decision. The survey gathered startling results. While 59% of the males and 63% of the females said they wanted children, 38% men had experienced depression as compared to 27% of women. 50% of men underwent isolation because they did not have any kids, while only 27% of women experienced this. 56% of men had underwent grief, while only 43% of women have gone through sadness. 69% had gone through longing for a child while only 11% of women felt the same way. However, none of the men who participated in the survey felt guilty because they did not have children, as compared to 16% of the ladies.

Mr. Hadley stated that his study “challenges the common idea that women are much more likely to want to have children than men, and that they consistently experience a range of negative emotions more deeply than men if they don’t have children.”

The study has learned that men and women had miscellaneous influences on their desire to have kids. The men were more expected to state that family expectations, cultural and societal factors affected their decisions to have kids as compared to the women. The ladies were more likely to cite aspects such as biological clock and personal longing as stimuli to have kids.

Several of the interviewed men admitted that they were too reluctant of getting involved in relationships that will lead to having kids, thus they remain childless.

The survey was made by means of a questionnaire that was filled out online by participants aged 20 to 66 years. More than 80% of the participants were white British folk, 90% were heterosexual, 69% had permanent jobs while another 69% had acquired college degrees.
