Autumn is here! Can you smell it in the air? Depending on what climate you live in, the leaves may have already changed in color! There is a crispness in the air and the smell of spicy, warm beverages waft from neighbourhood homes.

Taking baby steps as you make the changes will be sufficient to create a healthier you this fall. Regardless of how busy your life is at the moment, taking up regular exercise and eating healthily this autumn will no doubt reap beneficial results. You might even want to keep a health diary to track your progress through the months of the season!

Whether you prefer living in endless summer or thrive with the change in seasons, there are a few things you can do to strengthen your immune system and enjoy vibrant health as the colder months come around the color.

Get More Sleep

As the days get shorter noticeably, you will probably feel your energy beginning to wane. This is nature’s way of telling you to get more sleep. Consolidate your energy to stay healthy in the colder months. Go to bed earlier slow down and sleep more. This way, you will have great reserves of energy when you need it the most.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Just because it is colder does not mean you shouldn’t go outside. Spend time surrounded by nature to improve physical and mental health. This means that it is not a good idea to start hibernating just because it has gotten a tad nippier. As often as you can, go outside in the fall. This helps your body adjust to the change in temperature. It also prepares the defences of your body for this type of weather. When the winter hits, you will be less likely to get sick. This is also a great time to stay active. Welcome the season with a change in your activity pattern. For example, swap swimming for cycling or walking. Take up Pilates or join a walking group. Drink Vitamin D and head outdoors when the sun is brightest at noon. Doing these activities will enable your body to adjust to the changing season and at the same time, get you healthy enough to tackle the coming winter, where temperatures could drop even more.

Fall Colors On Your Plate

As the weather gets more chilly, it is a good idea to support and consolidate the natural inner-warmth of your body by staying away from cool food like watermelon and salads. Rather, consume warmer food such as soups and roasted vegetables. It is easier to change with the seasons when you add dark red, orange and sweet yellow vegetables to your diet. Incorporate beets into your meals as well as carrots and winter squash. Use a slow cooker to bake and roast. Add warmth to your meals with your crock pot. Use herbs for warming such as nutmeg, garlic, cinnamon, turmeric and ginger. This brings the warms of fall right to the table!
