Happy Retirement

“Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to.”

– Harry Emerson Fosdick

Retirement can be a scary move for all of us.  Of course, the financial end of it is always the biggest consideration and worry.  With an economy as it is now, a strong retirement plan is essential.  The big question is, what would you like to do with the rest of your life?

It doesn’t mean just sitting every day and becoming stagnant and boring.  Consider taking up some classes where you will meet new people and continue a social life.  You can actually end up with a more social life and more variety than when you were working.

Some tips that you might apply to your life are:

  • Retirement living is about more than money.
  • Make life plans.  Maybe this is the time to take that Alaskan cruise or the European tour.
  • Find a purpose.  Pick up a hobby or perhaps a part time job.  Take some classes on subjects you haven’t had time for before.
  • Keep your mind sharp.  (Use it or lose it)  Try a musical instrument, reading or maybe even some classes at the community center or college.
  • Volunteer.  Involvement in the community is a great way to give back and interact with people.  A school, nursing home or even at the hospital, are excellent ways to volunteer your time.
  • Develop new friendships.  This can be through schooling, volunteering or maybe through some other activities or interests.  Perhaps church activities, dancing and social networking will create new friends.
  • Ask your spouse or partner about what they want.  Make time for your partner and make sure what he/she wants going forward as well.  Visit family and friends and strive to do your activities together.
  • Increase your financial stability.  Working part-time doing something new and interesting to you, will not only help finances but will allow new friendships while keeping the brain keen.
  • Keep your spirits up.  Take the challenge of retirement in stride and make it a “good” thing.  Keep positive and get excited about all the new adventures you now have time for.  Assess your mood and find things to keep you involved.
  • Remain healthy.  Keeping busy will help keep your mind off health issues.  Regular exercise will not only keep you healthy, but will also create new friendships.  Look forward to each day emotionally and wake every morning with a positive attitude.

Retirement doesn’t have to be sadness, sickness, and depression.  It is what you make it, so get out there and reach for those horizons.  This is a new era for you, and now is the time to do all those things you love but never had the time to do before.  Whether it’s reading, traveling or being able to visit those grandkids, just get out there and do it!  Happy camping and happy living.  Just ENJOY!
